WHOIS is a protocol that makes it an easy task to see the information a specific domain name has been registered with either through a command line or by using special web-based lookup websites. This information includes the names, address and e-mail address of the owner, admin, technical and billing persons plus the registrar organization the domain name has been obtained through, the creation and expiration dates. Aside from a number of country-code TLDs that have certain limitations, the WHOIS info of any domain name can be changed freely anytime, which is quite vital given that in accordance with the policies of the top-level Internet Corporation, ICANN, all details have to be current and valid all of the time. Failing to conform with these policies may lead to losing the ownership of a domain and in some cases a domain may even be removed from the Domain Name System and released for free registration.
